There are many different contracts and proposal forms that may or may not contain wording that protects you from the unscrupulous tactics some contractors are using to escape the cost of insurance. For large utilities and department stores that just subcontract their labor tone man shops that just either ignore the need for insurance or don't realize the liability they impose upon their unsuspecting customers. Either way, you need to look for the wording in the contract or use the following form to protect yourself.

All employees and subcontractors used to complete the project
contracted from ____________________________ and dated ______________
will be covered by all necessary liability and workman's compensation
insurance. This assurance relieves the homeowner of all liability
due to injury during performance of the above-mentioned contract.
